Benefits of R290 and R744 in Scotsman Ice Machines:

R290 and R744 refrigerants have significantly lower than 150 GWP (Global Warming Potential) compared to traditional refrigerants, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Scotsman Ice machines powered by R290 and R744 contribute to environmental conservation efforts.

R290 and R744 are known for their high energy efficiency, allowing Scotsman Ice machines to operate more efficiently and reduce operating costs.

Scotsman Ice machines powered by R290 and R744 are designed for maximum reliability and longevity, ensuring optimal performance over time.

F-Gas Regulations

The European Union is committed to taking strong action to reduce the impact of climate change. The new F-Gas Regulation (2024/573) Directive, which will be fully implemented by 2025, aims to ban the use of harmful refrigerants with a high GWP (Global Warming Potential). The F-Gas Regulation relates to two major worldwide protocols on climate change: the Montreal Protocol, covering Ozone Depletion Concerns and the Kyoto Protocol, covering Global Warning Concerns.

The two significant extracts from new F-GAS Regulation (EU) 2024/573 are:

Article 11 - Placing into the EU countries:

From 1st January 2025 the sales of foams, technical aerosols, stationary refrigeration and stationary air-conditioning equipment and stationary heat pumps as referred to in Annex IV that contain, or whose functioning relies upon, fluorinated greenhouse gases with a GWP of 150 or more shall be prohibited,

Article 22 - Sales export from the EU countries:

From 12nd March 2025 the export of foams, technical aerosols, stationary refrigeration and stationary air-conditioning equipment and stationary heat pumps as referred to in Annex IV that contain, or whose functioning relies upon, fluorinated greenhouse gases with a GWP of 1 000 or more shall be prohibited.

By 2025, only refrigerants with a GWP of 150 or less will be legal to use within the EU.

Products

This is not correct. By using R290 refrigerant, to meet safety standards, product that have up to 150 grams charge are safe of use and do not require specific condition of installation

Product that have charge higher than 150 grams and up to 500 grams will need to be installed considering the volume of the space required (example: to leave empty space of 10 volumetric meters).

Any charge higher than 500 grams is banned, so products will not be allowed for sales.

Actually, the products can be shipped by truck or by sea with no major issues, however we expect that local authorities may rule for higher safety for transportation of R290 charged products.

Only the products charged with no any higher than 100 gr of R290 can be transported by Air.

Actually, there are not specific norms in place on how to maintain a proper and safe stock of products charged with R290.

We are asking for more details to EU and local authorities. Also, fire brigade could get involved to certify spaces as safe for R290 stock.

Yes, products can be maintained and re-charged with HFC refrigerant, if those will be still made available. However, the article 13 “Control of use” prohibits as from January 2032 any use or maintenance of products that have a GWP higher than 750. So, any with 404,452 and 134 too.

R454C (or A2L) is a mildly flammable refrigerant with a GWP of 146, so permitted in the EU countries.

The permitted charge is up to 1.200 gr.

We are investigating if this refrigerant will follow suit the regulations of R290 in terms of safety and hazards.

It is a listed refrigerant in the USA so used for their higher production products.

This depends on local authorities/countries. The common practice is to have people certified or have special permit/patent for servicing R290 charged products. Technicians will have to attend specific courses.
